There is a difference between being a tourist and being a resident when you come to a place.

Sungmin spent the first few weeks feeling like he's just visiting, because that's how he goes about exploring the city. Siwon laughed at him, with him, held his hand only to let it go to snap a picture of Sungmin with his new camera. Sungmin had laughed too but refused to pose for him even when asked; had hid most of his face behind his hands, only his eyes visible in the spaces between his fingers.

That’s how they spend August.

It’s quite uneventful, not that either of them minds that, because the move to another part of the world is big enough of an event in itself.

Halfway through September Siwon takes him to a shop on a street he can’t remember the name of, because he’s never in the area, just to show him a coat. The perfect coat, to use Siwon’s words. The store would look as impersonal and cold as the outside of the building if not for the colours of the clothes, and Siwon pushes him forward with an insistent hand on his back, until they see the coat — Sungmin knows it’s the coat the second he sees it, because there can’t be any other Siwon meant for him to see.

It is nicely fitted, in a cheeky raspberry red colour and Sungmin can’t help but think Oh. Siwon is smiling, says ‘Isn’t it lovely’ and it’s almost like he’s bragging when combined with how proud he looks. Sungmin strokes the fabric of the coat with a hand, his fingers playing with the buttons when he reaches them. Raspberry red is a nice colour because of several reasons.

‘Do you like it?’ Siwon asks then, a big smile twisting his lips and those stupid dimples showing and eyes expectant. Sungmin runs the tip of his tongue over the roof of his mouth.

‘Sure,’ he replies, ‘but I’m not really sure it’s in my price range.’

‘I can--’

‘It’s not in our price range,’ Sungmin interrupts, tone firm, and he makes clear that this topic isn’t open for discussion. Siwon looks crestfallen, his eyes almost comically wide. Then, a smile grows on his lips until dimples and blindingly white teeth shows, his head cocked to the side as he looks down on Sungmin. He noticed, Sungmin thinks, and if his cheeks feels a little warmer there’s nothing to it.

Routine isn’t bad. That’s what Sungmin thinks at least. So he doesn’t mind when they fall into one. That’s what October brings with it.

Routine.

Though, it isn’t only routine in the end, not with excitingly new smells and spices different from Korea along with pumpkin orange. Halloween. Sungmin refuses to get dressed up, but Siwon gets roped into it by some of the people he works with and that ends with Sungmin having an armful of drunk, badly wrapped mummified pharaoh. He teases Siwon with it for days. Works it into the routine, until he lets it drop.

They have to make a decision, soon. Where to spend Christmas, the New Year and Sungmin’s birthday.

‘It should be with you family,’ Siwon says. ‘Your birthday should be celebrated with your family.’

‘I want to stay here.’ Sungmin tries to keep his voice soft, stop the hard edges from creeping in. He has already made a decision. Now he only needs to get Siwon to agree with it. He sees Siwon’s chest rising as he takes a deep breath and he has to quickly find his words or this might become another unnecessary fight, that might not be as minor as the ones concerning what they should eat to breakfast.

‘Sungmin,’ Siwon says, grips one of his hands in both of his. Sungmin groans. ‘Family is--’

‘Important, I know. I think we should go to Korea for the Lunar New Year’ Sungmin smiles, raises finger to put over Siwon’s lips to keep him quiet. ‘I love my family. But Siwon, I have everything I need here.’

Siwon blushes a bright pink colour, one that Sungmin hasn’t seen for years.

December is best summarised through one evening with magical snowfall, shopping for Christmas presents on busy streets. Snowflakes lands in Sungmin’s eyelashes and Siwon kisses him softly, his right hand on the small of his back and the other holding the shopping bags. The fabric of Siwon’s dark coat is heavy, much heavier than the fabric of Sungmin’s own coat. He shivers, and Siwon pulls him a little closer. The air smells like almonds and apples, hot chocolate and coffee.
