Amber runs over the hot sand, laughing, and hair dripping with sea water. The sand isn't hot enough to be burning, but it still pushes her to run faster, up to where Soojung is sitting.
"Hey, you," she says and sits down on the towel she had left on Soojung's head but that's now laying on the beach. Soojung waves and puts a cigarette in her mouth, before she stretches her arms above her head. Amber can hear her joints popping. After drinking a couple of mouthfuls of water she says, "You should try going for a swim sometime."
Soojung takes the cigarette into one hand, holds it loosely between her fingers. Lets her hand drop to hang freely in the air. "Yeah, sometime."
"Your loss." Amber laughs when she sees Soojung roll her eyes behind her big sunglasses. A silence settled between them after that. The families have started to leave and the guy who works in the beach bar has turned up the volume to the radio.
Soojung tips her head back and sighs. "This is how I want to live my life," she says and her voice is decisive. Amber doesn't see any reason to question her or indulge in what can easily become a spiel, instead she reclines on the towel. Feels the sand between her toes, most of it slipping away when she first curls and then lifts them an inch above the ground.
